Cork – Clare Challenge: Old Head, Cork, Dromoland
Length: 7,200 yards
Old Head Golf Club located 7 miles from Kinsale town is a links Course built on a 220-acre diamond of land. It is a remarkably dramatic piece of Ireland, protruding over two miles into the Atlantic Ocean. From the tips, the course stretches to over 7,000 yards with a minimum of five tees per hole. The 220-acre site of five par 3’s, five par 5’s and eight par 4’s is configured as two returning loops of nine holes. Eight of the holes play directly along the cliff tops, and all eighteen holes provide stunning ocean views.
With the ever-changing sea breezes, the course provides a stern test to the touring pro and the high handicapper alike. The course has been described as “the most spectacular course on earth” and since its creation in 1997, has become a “must play” for all discerning golfers the world over.
Length: 6,770 yards
Cork Golf Club is a parkland/heathland course, which is located five miles east of Cork City on Little Island and only 30 minutes from Cork International Airport. The course opens with several holes of classic parkland, broad rolling acres of emerald turf studded with stands of ancient trees, rising gently to an escarpment overlooking the River Lee. From there comes an easy descent to two holes hugging the river bank over country rich in gorse and with a distinct touch of heathland.
The final holes are played in an area known as ‘The Park’ and the requirement for accuracy from the tee does not diminish. More intimidation awaits on the elevated 17th tee with out-of-bounds down the left it takes a strong nerve to keep a score going at this hole. At 426 yards the final hole is also demanding – straight and long is the only means of securing a safe par. This course has beauty, variety and challenge in equally generous scoops.
Length: 6,824 yards
Dromoland Golf Club was set up in 1962 on the grounds of the Dromoland Castle. Since then it has catered to many of the best personalities and golfers around. In 2003, the Dromoland golf course was redesigned to the highest standards by Joe Carr and Ron Kirby. It is situated on 400 unspoilt acres of lush wooded parkland enhanced by the gently flowing River Rine which becomes a feature for three of the many beautiful holes on the course.
You could say that the new look course is Clare’s answer to Augusta and it’s been elevated to premier status within Irish golfing circles. In 2006 a new Golf Academy was added to the course. The greens in this are the same Creeping Bent grass that is used out on the course so make your mistakes here. Between the facilities and the spectacular views that you will see around the course, this will be a golfing experience that you are unlikely to forget too soon.
